Summary
The International Energy Agency (IEA) notes an accelerating transformation of the global power sector. In 2025, electricity generation from renewable energy sources (RES) increased by 9%, while solar power output rose by a record 620 TWh (up from 450 TWh in 2024). The share of renewables exceeded one-third of global electricity generation (compared to 23% ten years ago), and by 2030 renewables and nuclear power are expected to account for around 50% of global generation (up from 42% in 2025). Coal-fired generation is projected to decline by an average of 0.9% per year in 2026–2030, reducing coal’s share to 27% (from 34% in 2025), while gas-fired generation is expected to accelerate, growing by 2.6% annually. Additional electricity demand in the coming years will be met primarily by low-carbon sources; however, coal will remain the single largest source of global power generation.
