Summary
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) examined how the growing demand for new skills, particularly in IT and artificial intelligence (AI), is reshaping employment structures and wage dynamics. In advanced economies, around 10% of job vacancies require at least one new skill, and such competencies are typically associated with higher wages. At the same time, the spread of AI-related skills does not necessarily lead to an overall increase in employment and may negatively affect job opportunities in occupations with high automation potential. The IMF concludes that countries need to strengthen education and workforce reskilling systems, while also fostering innovation and firms’ capacity to absorb new skills, in order to reduce the growing mismatch between labor market demand and supply.
