Summary

SAI Brazil audited the strategic plans in the mining sector: the Ten-Year Geological Mapping Plan (Plano Decenal de Mapeamento Geológico) and the Ten-Year Mineral Resources Research Plan (Plano Decenal de Pesquisa de Recursos Minerais). These plans are being developed by the state-owned Company for Mineral Resources Research (Companhia de Pesquisa de Recursos Minerais) in collaboration with the Geological Survice of Brazil (Serviço Geológico do Brasil) under the supervision of the Ministry of Mining and Energy (Ministério de Minas e Energia, the Ministry). According to auditors' estimates in 2024 the mining sector's revenue reached 270.8 billion Brazilian reais (USD 54.56 billion) which is 9.1% higher than the previous year. The audit revealed deficiencies in the management and control of the implementation of the plans such as insufficient transparency and a lack of clear criteria for project selection. SAI Brazil recommended improving management processes to enhance the effectiveness of public policies in the mining sector.
